Not only is the garden at Caisson House beautifully designed to be at one with nature, but it also, unusually has a canal as an important feature of the garden. A rill runs away from a pool, set amid borders of Iris, Geranium and topiarised yew and box in front of the house. A long border of perennials leads into the walled garden with two much-used glasshouses, a potager and a substantial orchard. Below this lies the canal, where the stone walls of old locks, now dry, give onto a pound, over looked by a stone bridge.
The first sight of Iford Manor is enchanting; the early 15th century bridge across the river, decorated with a statue of Britannia, with the serene 1720s façade of the house in the background. Harold Peto, architect and garden designer, bought the house in 1899 and began to develop the highly architectural garden with a series of richly planted terraces, ornamented with buildings and his fine collection of sculpture.
