Fonthill has a long history. The current house was built on the cellars of a house designed by Detmar Blow in 1904 and demolished in 1972. Tania Compton redesigned the formal garden around the house, which forms a series of interconnected spaces. Above the house, a woodland garden filled with spring-flowering, acid-loving shrubs has been planted under the guidance of Chelsea Gold Medal designer Marie-Louise Agius.
Pythouse, a 1720s house that was enlarged in a neo-classical style in the 1800s, stands in glorious parkland. Its three-acre walled garden is discreetly positioned behind a screen of trees. The restaurant, within the walls, opens directly onto the garden, which in turn supplies the restaurant kitchen with seasonal fruit and vegetables.
Corsley House is a Georgian farmhouse smartened up in 1812 with a Greek Revival façade. The fifteen-acre garden has been reworked into a happy blend of traditional and contemporary gardening. The Wave Lawn was created in 2019. The Victorian walled garden is divided into sections, including a fruit cage, herb bed, cut-flower bed, and vegetables, and is now gardened organically.
