The garden is a dozen years old, but it has an air of greater age. An avenue of fastigiate hornbeams leads to the front of the house, where pleached Parrotia persicas are underplanted with perennials and grasses. Fruit cages, pear tunnels, espaliered apples, and vegetable beds fill the beautifully maintained kitchen garden. The Rill Garden, enclosed by beech and yew hedges, has roses and clematis, trained up pyramids, set in wide mixed borders.
The Bannermans moved on to create a garden at Trematon Castle. The current owners have achieved the seemingly impossible: taking on the garden and not only maintaining it beautifully, but adding further delights of their own.
Since 2010, the garden has been managed for increased biodiversity and native flora, with plantings of woodland, hedgerows, orchards, and a wildflower meadow. The ornamental gardens are an evolving experiment and comprise a perennial garden, a barn garden of self-seeders, and a Herb Garden. The Kitchen Garden ensures self-sufficiency for fruit and vegetables for much of the year.
