Tour 2 Gloucestershire

Rockliffe

Rockliffe is the perfect blend of trees and shrubs and generously filled borders, balanced by a strong structure of hedges and topiary. The formality of a long canal is offset by Cornus controversia ‘Variegata’ overhanging a sunken pool. On the other side of the house, a shallow valley contains a beautifully maintained kitchen garden. Justly, Rockliffe was voted the nation’s favourite garden in 2024.

Upton Wold

Upton Wold is one of the great Cotswold gardens. A long border, concealed from the main lawn by a yew hedge, is brim-full with Phlox and Geraniums, Heucheras and Hostas. A secretive pond, with lovely marginal planting, is approached through a bank of wild-flowers. The kitchen garden is awash with a beguiling combination of blue Iris and white foxgloves.

Greenfields, Little Rissington

The garden, with white Wisteria and rose clad walls, lies immediately behind the house. Here borders are filled with roses and summer-flowering perennials. A walk between clipped Portuguese Laurel, underplanted with lavender, leads to a doorway and beyond  the walls there is an immaculate vegetable garden and an informal woodland garden running down to a stream-fed pond.
