The restrained garden in front of the house is no preparation for the luxuriant planting inside. Box and yew hedges focus on an ancient pear tree, from which grass paths radiate across the garden. The structure is softened, not only by Louise’s generous planting of perennials and roses, but also by Fergus’ vegetables, one merging happily in with the other.
The position of the house is superb, surrounded by an ancient deer park, with long views north towards Alfred’s Tower. On one side, the land falls into a valley, planted as an arboretum. A lake was dug in front of the house in 1726. Advised by Martin Lane Fox, double shrub and perennial borders, punctuated by yew arches, run parallel to the walled garden.
Isabel and Julian Bannerman, while creating wonderful gardens for their clients, make good gardens for themselves. Ashington is a young garden, as everything has been planted since 2019. Nothing has been retained of the garden they inherited except for the cider apple orchard, but the garden has already acquired an air of extraordinary maturity.
