Tour 3 Monmouthshire

Rockfield Park

The house and garden stand above the River Monnow, with one half descending to the river, planted with fine Japanese maples. The other half is a series of rooms , with borders sheltered by stone walls, a productive vegetable garden and an apple and pear orchard. Beech hedges surround a rill garden, with double borders and a rose-covered pergola.

High Glanau Manor

In1923 Henry Avray Tipping, the Architectural Editor of Country Life, created a wonderful Arts and Crafts garden with distant views over the Usk valley. Double borders in white, blue and yellow run from the house to a wooden pergola, and, behind a wall, the vegetable garden and large Edwardian glasshouse by Messenger & Co.

Mounton

Avray Tipping completed the house and garden in 1914. These went into decline until, in 2016, Arne Maynard triumphantly restored the gardens. Borders and the bowling green have been replanted, trees cut back, the 24-pillar pergola restored and the rock garden entirely recreated. In short, a wonderful early 21st century tribute to a remarkable early 20th century Arts and Crafts garden.
