The garden dates from the 1860s when the magnificent plane trees were planted. However, the planting is constantly being reviewed and new borders created. Benchers Border, in front of the Great Hall, has been recently replanted with yew cones set among grasses and red, orange and yellow-flowering perennials. Heritage Mulberry trees and Amelanchier sit amongst new woodland beds. Open lawns contrast with denser planting of shrubs, perennials and herbs in the Kitchen Garden. We will be given a private tour of the gardens by the Head Gardener before lunch in Lincoln’s Inn.
This is a very rare opportunity to see those parts of Regent’s Park which are not open to the public. The Park was conceived in 1810 by the Prince Regent as part of a larger scheme to link his residence at Carlton House to Primrose Hill. We will be taken on a special tour to Park Square and Park Crescent gardens, which are linked by the recently restored Nursemaids’ Tunnel, before tea in the private gardens of Cumberland Terrace.
