This is a quintessential English summer garden of perennials and roses in the borders and covering the walls of the house. Everything is grown to perfection and is bursting with health. There is an arboretum of Acers, Malus, cherries and many other rarities. On the other side of the house is a red garden and, around the pond, an extensive planting of Primulas and other marginal plants.
The garden sits behind the house and is a mass of roses and perennials. Pink and white roses flower amid a foam of Alchemilla. An arch leads through to the late-summer borders. After a calm interlude of pleached limes and a croquet lawn, a door opens onto gardens with espaliered pears, apples and a mass of scented roses, culminating in the immaculate kitchen garden.
The River Test runs through this fifteen-acre garden. By the house, the planting is simple and architectural. Yew domes frame a bench placed with a view across a sunken garden. The water garden is fringed with Darmera, Iris, Osmunda regalis and cut-leaf Japanese Acers. Bridges across the river encourage exploration of the far bank which is deliberately left to grow wilder for the benefit of wildlife.
