This garden is a wonderful surprise. Starting with a gravel garden along the drive, it takes off spectacularly with the lake which is the heart of the garden. Borders are crammed with desirable plants. Walkways lead around the lake through plantings of grasses, Primulas, annual Persicaria, Taxodium and Metasequoia to the collection of Hydrangeas.
The garden is a perfect mixture of formal and informal planting. A parterre leads to a vista through hornbeam hedges and an avenue of tulip trees. Borders surround a lawn which gives onto the wild-flower meadows. A woodland garden extends the flowering period and an avenue of Malus ‘Evereste’ and Acer freemanii ‘Autumn Blaze’ leads to an arboretum.
The house was originally monastic lodgings and the beautifully planted garden is made up of a series of rooms. Behind the 16th century square dovecote, clipped box shapes and a yew hedge, is a triangle of Panicum virgatum. Beyond the fruit and cutting garden is a wilder area with a pond sheltered by the massive enclosing banks of the medieval town walls.
