This is a garden of borders filled with colour from Spring when Himalayan Birch are underplanted with Hellebores, Euphorbias and Narcissus and Pheasant’s Tail grass, through the Summer, where Geraniums vie with Roses, Geum and Alliums, then Echinacea and Salvias.
The garden is tucked into a fold of the South Downs with fabulous views. It was developed along the old drive, now a grass path, with herbaceous borders on either side. A lawn gives onto the open grass bowl studded with a magnificent display of wild flowers, starting with wild Narcissus in April, then cowslips and six varieties of Orchid in June.
North of the house, which dates from 1829, lies the shrubbery, with a magnificent Cedar of Lebanon and a temple built in 1992. South, are the walled gardens, sheltering behind a line of pleached limes. Box hedges enclose beds filled with perennials. Half of a glasshouse has been converted into a Laburnum tunnel and the remaining half is now home to a flourishing Plumbago.
