The dignified late Georgian house stands high, looking south towards the Simonside Hills. In front of the house, the lawn becomes wildflower meadow merging into the landscape, while a walk through the woodland leads to an enchanting shepherd’s hut placed on a slope looking west into the Cheviots. Returning to the house, a wall stands protectively over a long border filled with grasses and perennials. An adjoining kitchen garden is half productive and half ornamental, with a large glasshouse against a warm south-facing wall.
In the 1790s the Lorbottle Estate was acquired from the Duke of Portland and the restrained house overlooks its park and steeply rising ground beyond. Behind the house, stone fruit-filled baskets frame the gates into the large walled garden, which has been restored as an ornamental garden. Beyond this lies the woodland garden, still a work in progress despite the planting of over 150 rhododendrons.
David and Angela Kelly bought Stanton Fence for its location and Arabella Lennox-Boyd designed the garden. From the entrance courtyard, the garden wraps around the house. A pergola is smothered in Rosa ‘New Dawn’ and ‘Albertine’, and a mass of Clematis ‘Perle d’Azur’ and Rosa ‘Paul’s Himalayan Musk’ covers the house. In the kitchen garden, the emphasis is on ornament, from the box parterre and white sweet peas to the greenhouse which is home to the late Angela Kelly’s collection of pelargoniums.
