Tour 12 Powys

Byrngwyn Hall

The house was built in 1774 and then rebuilt following a fire in 1802, when the gardens and lakes were created. The trees are remarkable, not only the old, which include a Wellingtonia, well-grown oaks, ancient yews and Scots Pines, but also those planted over the last 30 years, particularly spectacular maples, rare oaks, Taxodium and Embothrium coccineum. The ornamental gardens include mixed borders, a yew-enclosed rose garden and croquet lawn and an intriguing Poison Garden.

Vaynor Park

The house stands spectacularly on a hill over looking a magnificent park, with long views over the Welsh Marches and into Shropshire. Built in the 1640s, it was substantially remodelled in the 1850s, when the current garden was laid out in terraces below the house. Mixed borders line the courtyard walls and a long south-facing herbaceous border lies snugly below the house. A fan-shaped parterre, planted with old roses, lies on the lowest level.
