Tour 13 Shropshire

Windy Ridge

The garden is not large, but it packs a considerable punch. The newest part is a combination of grasses, perennials and shrubs. The main part is centred on a circular lawn with trees, including an ancient apple, and established shrubs, particularly a large Parrotia, allowing views to the pond behind.

Preen Manor

The garden is largely formal as befits an old monastic establishment. A long vista, starting with a rectangular pool, continues along an avenue of Cornus florida. The kitchen garden is part-productive and partly ornamental; there is a rose garden, a herb garden with beautifully pruned apple arches and a Cottage Garden. Outside is the wonderful view over to Wenlock Edge.

Cruckfield House

There are many good things in this garden. Gently sloping lawns run down to a small lake, adorned with a temple and interesting specimen trees. Roses are pruned to perfection. However, the tour de force is the garden to the south of the house, enclosed by holly hedges, where mixed borders line three sides and specimen trees and topiaried yew give structure.
