Tour 2 Monmouthshire

Highfield Farm

This three-acre garden is only six years old, but in extraordinarily little time it has matured and is filled with about 1,400 plants, mainly perennial, but also with a distinctive shrub and small tree collection. These grow in a wide range of conditions, from near-woodland, through open borders in full sun, to almost gravel gardening, with wonderful views towards the Black Mountains.

Trewyn House

The house is medieval, but with a 1690s front. The approach through the park is dramatic; with urn-topped gates piers giving entrance to a topiary-filled forecourt. On the garden side a canal is used as a natural swimming pool, with pleached limes on one side and ancient Irish yews on the other. The garden drops down towards extensive woodland gardens.

New Inn Farm

The garden, on the edge of the Black Mountains, is a sophisticated and beautifully planted cottage garden. Within the walls is a densely planted maze of very desirable and unusual trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Behind the house, topiaried hedges echo the mountains beyond.
